Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
New research reveals that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments should be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
